Virtual Manipulatives Site
Definition
Web-based virtual manipulatives are used by students to explore and understand mathematical concepts in a more concrete way than afforded by textbooks or other static materials.
Features
Mathematics teachers often use physical or concrete manipulatives (e.g., cones, rods, blocks, tiles, etc.) to help students understand mathematics concepts and operations in a more concrete way. Virtual manipulatives mimic these physical manipulatives, but they are freely available online. Sites like the National Library of Virtual Manipulatives provide free access to a range of virtual manipulatives organized by grade level and mathematics topic. In many cases, supporting instructional materials or suggestions are provided as well.
